 Rains fell, and fell. Our local creeks swelled, but we dodged a bullet. Whew!

Rain, rain, rain

Everyone knows it rains in the Catskills; a lot. And there is no such thing as climate change, right? (ahem). But it has been raining A LOT this summer.

No water shortage here, thanks to an atmospheric river

From a  story dated 24 July 2018 found on the website NewYorkUpstate.com:

 Almost 7 inches of rain fell Monday in the Catskills as a rainy week kicked off in Upstate New York.

A weather observer in Phoenicia, in Ulster County, measured 6.68 inches of rain, according to National Weather Service reports. That was the highest of more than 200 Upstate locations reported to the weather service.

More than 5 inches fell in neighboring Greene County as thunderstorms dumped torrential rain Monday. Farther to the north, Albany and Fulton counties had reports of more than 4 inches. 

The "atmospheric river" of Atlantic Ocean moisture was funneled through eastern New York and parts of the Southern Tier Monday. Much of Western New York and the North County got a half-inch or less.

First snowfall of the season

Snow is forecast to fall this Saturday 9 December; perhaps an inch.

Hudson Valley Weather

The Mid Hudson Valley from New Paltz to Saugerties is taking a pretty good beating at the moment. Frequent lightning, heavy rain and hail are impacting this region, please post observations below.

Post-diluvian

A week after the August rains and flood, Stoney Clove Creek is returning to normal. Compare to the video posted below on August 15, and note the significant difference.

By Monday the 22nd the water level was further down, though above what is 'normal' for August.

Chichester floods

After some light rains on Saturday and Sunday, very heavy rains fell overnight into Monday the 15th. These pictures and videos give you a good look at how sleepy Stoney Creek

went from its placid, lazy flow on Saturday afternoon at 1.33pm to a rampaging big muddy

on Monday morning at 9:30. Phoenicia is reported to have received 5 inches of rain, Tannersville 3.7 inches of rain. Whatever the total that fell at the source of our Stoney Creek up in the Devil's Tombstone, there is no doubt of its ferocity and power. Look (and listen) to our little brook gone muddy:

4 July dinner & dance

Thunderstorms boomed at 5 in the morning, and rains fell most of the day. Yet our spirits were not dampened; we held our annual 4th of July weekend  cocktail hour and dinner inside the CPOA clubhouse. Following dinner, square dancing.

Mid-March in Chichester

A foot,  or so, of snow remains in places in Chichester. There has been quite a bit of melt. Last Friday, 11 March, Phoenicia received 4.9 inches of rain. As a result of all that melting snow and precipitation, the creeks and streams are running fast, and muddy. I took this video (Spike Lee has nothing to worry about) early on Saturday afternoon. Après le déluge

Rain began falling on Sunday at 6am, and kept raining all day long. All that water, and it was much; how much? this much:

wrought many changes with the volume of water and the subsequent modification in its course and speed. Our beautiful swimming hole is now inundated.

By one measurement, 6.14 inches of rain fell in Phoenicia. Our home-made measurement was 8 inches of rain. If one inch of rain equals one foot of snow ...
